Whether it’s a brick and mortar store or an online gig, there are certain organizational tools that are necessary to running a successful business. In my experience, here are a few essentials for keeping me in line.

Planner
As a school teacher, I used one on a daily basis and taught my students to do the same. For some reason, when I became a work at home mom, I thought one wasn’t needed. Boy, was I wrong! I need it now more than ever. From business appointments to remembering it’s “uniform” day, this thing keeps me sane. I recently got a new Erin Condren and customized it just for me. There are other more affordable ones out there with similar styles. Target usually has a great selection.

Google Calendar
If you don’t have a Gmail account you’re literally living in the Stone Age. (Don’t feel bad. I didn’t have one until about 4 months ago.) I quickly learned that Google Calendar through my Gmail is my BFF and really helps for when my planner isn’t around. You can never have too many check systems so don’t think because you wrote it down you don’t need a digital back up or vice versa. Just like Santa, make a list and check it twice!

Zoom
This is the perfect online resource for virtual meetings. The free version offers you unlimited use for up to 40 minutes at a time. I love being able to “see” folks during these meetings who live on the other side of the country or world for that matter. With computer and mobile options it’s ideal for those of us on the go.

Square
Cash registers with card processing systems are becoming a thing of the past. Quickbooks Self Employed
While not a free service, the investment itself is a tax write off. You can use the program/app on a computer and your mobile device. It will help you organize all of your expenses, income and even keep up with your mileage. I have been using the computer version, payroll included, for 11 years now with our farming operation. I recently implemented the app in my LimeLife business and it’s hands down the easiest thing ever! My accountant is even linked to my app so that she can get instant reports for quarterly taxes and what not. No more tallying up paper receipts at the end of the year.
